Evaluation 1

The Brief.

We had been approached by film 4 to make a new british social realist filmed aimed at british 16- 24 year old. we needed to make a 2 minute opening scene which had the conventions of a british social realist genre and to meet all expectations for this type of film. We also needed to keep cost low as its a british social realism so all the material used in the film had to be original. We needed use themes which occur in british social realism films and use the stereotypical conventions that you would see in a BSR.

In my production we clearly used the theme of poverty in our opening scene. This themes come up a lot in british social realism films. At 2:00 we can see the main character goes into the fridge but is unable to eat because theirs no food. This connotes that the main character is poor and is unable to buy food. Also at 0.39 we can see our main characters full costume. He is wearing a Hood with a body warmer. Both these pieces of clothing are not branded which shows he cant afford branded clothes such as Ralph Lauren or Nike. Also at 1:10 we can see the main character getting chased out of the alleyway. In most BSR there is violence and young teenagers fighting each other for money and turf.

We choose the title Fast Life as it connotes the life's of young teenagers today. They are living for today rather then tomorrow so their future are not very bright. Most teenagers in east London which are gangs normally die at a young age as well because they get killed by rival gangs. Also Most teenagers don't have a fun childhoods so they grow up quickly and want to be like the older men with all the money and cars. The title relates to the narrative because the main character Terrell is living in poverty and is not get any money so he switches to the drug game in which he is making fast money , which connotes the title. They don't want to get a education and get a job , they rather sell drugs and get money fast.

The opening scene allows the audience to see that the main character is very lonely as he is not with any friends or family. He goes home looks in the fridge and goes to bed , he doesn't talk to any family members of friends. We also see that his living in poverty as he had no food in his fridge so he goes to sleep whilst his hungry. Also the target audience realize is not the nicest of areas that our main character lives in as two male teenagers chase after him for his phone out of a alleyway in broad daylight. We can see that the main character is not  happy with the way his living as he doesn't smile once in the opening scene  he looks very depressed and lonely

A real BSR that you can compare my opening scene to is OneDay. At 3:07 on the opening scene you can see a bunch of people in a alleyway with black hoods and hats on. I used the same location as them with the same type of costumes. This is a representation of teenagers in the uk which are in gangs, so i used the same mise-en-scene as my movie has the same themes in the movie.
